Equation Writing Videos

Formula & Equation Writing

This is an updated & extended version of some resources I developed in 2011 to give some Equation Writing practice a more interesting context. I used it originally with an S3 class (14/15 years) but I'm attempting to provide 3 different levels / stages so should be flexible enough to tailor to a variety of ages.

The original resources were posted on the TES Resources Website and have generated some very positive comments.

Formula Writing levels

This is a tentative attempt to rationalise levels of Formula Writing taking into account the divisions previously used for Standard Grade and the (as yet) vague descriptions contained in the new National documents.

Starting Off

Should only involve simple two-element compounds but including the use of prefixes (what I call "Rule Breakers" in my notes). No mention of Roman Numerals but I'm going to include some in this category - otherwise the choice of reactions is too limited.

Pupils at this level would not be expected to balance equations but these would be appropriate as 'easier' examples for Balancing Equations once pupils progress to that level.

Going Further

More than two elements - introducing Groups, but avoiding reactions which require brackets is the rationale here. Balancing equations should generally be straightforward.

However, there is still scope for more complicated examples of Balanced Equations to crop up.

For the Enthusiast

Brackets around Groups will feature more in these reactions as well as more difficult Balancing of equations. Less commom chemicals - less familiar formulae perhaps.

Also suitable as Revision exercises for older pupils needing to refresh their skills.
