MYP4 Science Topics
I only taught Grade 9 MYP Science for one year 2019/2020 - should have been longer, but Covid pandemic meant I had to fly home.
So don't expect 'expert' versions but you may find the odd resource useful. This page deals mainly with content, I'll list my Criteria B, C & D Resources separately.

Statement of Inquiry Process
Identifying the relationships within and between models can build our understanding of the physical world.
Inquiry Questions
Factual: What are the characteristics of protons, neutrons and electrons?Factual: What is the accepted modern model of the atom?
Conceptual: How have scientist developed their ideas of the Model of the atom?
Debatable: At what stage does a theoretical Model become accepted as Scientific fact?
Content
- Structure of Atom
- Atomic Models through the Ages
- Role of Sub-atomic Particles
- Introduction to the Periodic Table
Assessment
As a teacher that was new to MYP, new to the school and with new classes, I was not tuned into ATL's etc, though I assessed their Atomic Models by having each student prepare a PowerPoint and assessed this as an ATL.
I mainly concentrated on trying to create a test structure that allowed
me to assess the different levels for Criteria A.
pdf - Atoms Test
At each level (1-2, 3-4, 5-6 & 7-8) I was looking at 4 out of 8 for lower grade and 6 out of 8 for higher grade.
I used my discretion when students achieved 'split' grades - for example, a 5 at level 3 but a 7 at level 4.
Teaching Strategies
Start with a Brainstorm centred around Periodic Table on whiteboard to establish what they already know and nudge them towards the idea that the patterns evident in the Periodic Table can only be explained by learning about the fundamental building block - the atom.
I also had a homework sheet that I used:
pdf - Elements of the Periodic Table
Activity 1 - Atoms Research Activity
I used the PhET simulation on Building Atoms to encourage students to work out the 'rules' governing atomic structure for themselves:-- that protons carry a positive charge
- electrons a negative charge
- neutrons have no charge
- protons define the type of atom.
- protons = electrons in neutral atom
- protons greater than electrons in positive ion
- protons less than electrons in negative ion
- neutrons determine stability of nucleus

Activity 2 - Research - Models of the Atom
pdf - Atomic ModelsSource 1: Students were then directed towards 2 Lessons from my N5ChemTutor App available as webpages.
- Lesson 1 - Early Atomic Models
- Lesson 2 - Later Models
Generally, I would quickly take students through these lessons then ask them to work through on their own.
Source 2: Students were then directed towards 4 more Lessons from my N5ChemTutor App available as webpages.
- Lesson 1 - Scale and Units
- Lesson 2 - Atomic Number
- Lesson 3 - Mass Number & Isotopes
- Lesson 4 - Relative Atomic Mass
Source 3: Students also used Glencoe Physical Science Text Book
- Lesson 1 - Atoms through the Ages (pdf)
- Lesson 2 - Subatomic particles (pdf)
To finish off this Topic, and to prepare for a Criteria A Test, students worked through some of the questions from the Glencoe Book.
pdf - Chapter Review Questions
I also produced a Revision Guide and went through this in class, emphasising the different demands of 'state', 'describe', 'outline' and 'explain'.
